It was built by the Rashidun caliph Umar ibn Al-Khattab in 637 CE. Al-Aqsa Mosque as a whole is widely confused with this chapel; particularly in the Western world. While Al-Aqsa Mosque is actually the entire area of the sanctuary, in modern times the name has been mistakenly used to refer to just the silver domed building.() Al Aqsa name is used to describe the whole area surrounded by the wall at the southern-eastern end of walled old Jerusalem.
